Project goal
The project’s goal is to increase disadvantaged persons’ access to clean and safe water in the area, through provision of water harvesting facilities and knowledge about proper management of clean, safe water.
Project objectives
The objectives of the project are:
- To educate disadvantaged persons in the area on proper handling and custody of clean and safe water at home
- To provide 40 plastic water tanks and accessories to households of objectively identified and selected disadvantaged persons in the area
- To construct 40 water jars for households of objectively identified and selected disadvantaged persons
Target groups
The project targets the following disadvantaged persons in the area:
- People Living With HIV/AIDS
- Orphans and other Vulnerable Children of child headed families
- Elderly persons
- Physically disabled persons
In selecting the project target beneficiaries, priority will be given to persons who have more than one of the above criteria. The selection will also be gender sensitive whereby women in all categories above will be given priority to benefit from the project.
Final beneficiaries
The project will in the long run benefit the following categories of people, in addition to the targeted groups mentioned above:
- Families of the target groups
- The communities among which the target groups live
- The local authorities in the area
Implementation approach
The implementation process will involve the following activities:
- Meeting local authorities to introduce the project in the area
- Conducting a field survey to objectively identify and select the beneficiaries of plastic water tanks
- Objectively identify and select the beneficiaries for water jars
- Mobilizing and educating the target groups about proper management and usage of water
- Procurement of plastic water tanks and installing them at homes of respective target beneficiaries
- Constructing water jars at homes of respective target beneficiaries
- Monitoring the implementation process of the project
- Carrying out participatory evaluation of the project
- Documenting project aspects
- Project lessons and innovations diffusion/dissemination to other stakeholders
Project introduction in the area
The project will be introduced in the area by meeting respective local authorities and brief them about it. The briefing will detail out the purpose of the project, mode of implementation, how the target communities will be involved in the implementation process and the expected benefits.
Beneficiary mobilization and sensitization
Target groups will be mobilized to attend sensitization meetings organized for their respective localities. During those meetings the communities will be sensitized about proper ways of managing and using safe water.
Identification of target groups
In conjunction with the local authorities the project target groups will be identified. The criteria to be used will include one’s being HIV positive and/or having AIDS, being a person with disability, being elderly or being an orphan or other vulnerable child in an child headed homes.
Procurement and instalment of water tanks
40 plastic water tanks will be procured and installed at homes of selected target beneficiaries. Each tank will carry a capacity of 5,000 liters.
Construction of water jars
40 water jars will be constructed at various homes of the selected beneficiaries. Each water jar will have a capacity of 5,000 liters.
Project monitoring
Monitoring will be participatory and continuous throughout the entire implementation process. This will be done to ensure that the implementation process remains on the right track at all times. At beneficiary level the beneficiaries will each monitor the progress of when to obtain what is due for him/her (a water tank, or a water jar). At community level the rest of the community members will monitor to ensure that the selected beneficiaries are the ones obtaining the interventions due to them. At institutional level the project leadership will monitor the works of the contractors constructing the water jars, and those installing the plastic water tanks.
Project evaluation
At the end of the project implementation an evaluation will be carried out to establish how successful the project will have been. The performance indicators for the project will include the following:
- Number of people sensitized about proper water usage and storage
- Number of sensitizations sessions held
- The field survey having been conducted and target groups objectively identified and selected
- Number of households boiling water before using it as drinking water
- Number of households keeping drinking water in recommended water storage facilities in cool environment
- Number of water jars constructed at homes of the target beneficiaries
- Number of plastic water tanks procured and installed in homes of the target beneficiaries
- Number of monitoring visits conducted
- The end-of-project evaluation exercise having been conducted
- The knowledge diffusion workshop having been held
- Availability of various project records
Documenting project aspects
Documentation will be an integral part of the entire implementation process. Relevant records will be kept as regards the project operations (both technical and financial). Such records will include monthly, field survey, monitoring and evaluation reports.
Knowledge dissemination
It is the intention of the project to disseminate lessons and innovations that will have been obtained during the implementation process. This will be accomplished by holding a knowledge dissemination workshop just before the end of the project funding period

- Increased access to clean and safe water in the area by the target groups and final beneficiaries
Specific results
The following are the expected specific results of the project:
- At least 100 disadvantaged people mobilized and sensitized about proper water management issues
- 40 plastic water tanks procured and installed at homes of respective beneficiaries
- 40 water jars constructed at homes of respective beneficiaries
- 80 disadvantaged people accessing clean and safe water as a result of the project intervention
- 80 households to which disadvantaged people belong accessing clean and safe water as a result of the project intervention
